Researching your enslaved ancestor: 1790-1860 Census

Census records in America

When researching your ancestors from the period of enslavement, it is essential to identify the slave owner associated with them during the relevant census year. This information can help establish a connection to these enslavers, even if your ancestors were recorded solely as property, without first or last names.

If your ancestors were classified as Free Persons of Color (FPOC), they would appear in the Free Census rather than the Slave Census.

Please refer to the information below to determine how many enslaved individuals were recorded for each enslaver by census year. If you believe you can identify your ancestors in the census, kindly inform us so that we can add their IDs to the source record.
